Medical Insurance 489 Visa

Hi, I have submitted EOI for Vic 190 and SA 489 and have received ITA from South Australia I have three questions: 1. Since 489 is a provisional visa, do we need to buy Medical Insurance or will we be eligible for Medicare? 2. If my son wants to join any university for his under graduation.... I was browsing around and also advice from my friends say go to BUPA for health insurance. For people in 489 visa, they are classified as Overseas visitor so they need to buy from the below page. Badly, on an average the price is up by 200$. You would need to double check with Medicare / Centrelink (as it is outside of migration as such), but my understanding is that it is still the case that 489 visa holders are not entitled to receive public health benefits and would require health insurance. There are a wide range of providers that can provide the type of health cover required.. The visa subclass 489 or the Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa, which Mr. Jijumon and his wife are on, is not covered under Medicare - Australia’s publicly funded universal healthcare system..

This is my very first topic and I hope to receive some info that can put my mind at ease. We are a family of 3(1kids) and are working on a migration plan to Adelaide, SA under the sub class via 489 which does not give similar benefits of a 189 or 190 visa category, i.e. education and health benefits.. Most health insurance policies do not cover pregnancy / having a baby during the first 12 months of the policy. 489 visa recipients are not covered by Medicare..

Adequate health insurance for visa holders. You are financially responsible for any health debts you incur in Australia. We might consider any outstanding health debts you have if you apply for a visa in future. If you are not eligible for Medicare, any treatment you have in a hospital or emergency room will be as a private patient.. When you are on a 489 visa you are not eligible for Medicare but when you transition to PR you can then get Medicare. So, my advise is since you have a known medical condition when your 489 visa gets granted and you are in australia be sure to get a private insurance to cover you in case of any emergency.
