When to bill CPT code 99214. According to EM university, in 2003 this code was used 56.7 percent of the time for internal medicine coding. It is no surprise that we like this "middle of the road" code. The problem is, just because we think it is middle of the road, doesn't make it so.. CPT Code 99214 is assigned to the medical service that complies with the following requirements: The patient is an established one, meaning is not their first visit. It must be an outpatient visit, meaning it must not incorporate a day of hospital time..
CPT CODE 99214 OFFICE OR OTHER OUTPATIENT ISIT T FOR ESTABLISHED PATIET This Fact Sheet is for informational purposes only and is not intended to guarantee payment for services, all services submitted to Medicare must meet Medical Necessity guidelines. The definition of “medically necessary” for Medicare. Yes, correct, a 99214 is a lower code than a 99204.....which is why insurance pays less for it. Not because it is an established patient, but because it is LESS SERVICE!!! FAR LESS SERVICE. A level 4 established patient is NOT a level 4 new patient.......get the fact that a Level 4 is a Level 4 out of your heads now!!!!.
